Fungi Outer Hebrides

Phylum: Basidiomycota   Family: Hygrophoraceae

Hygrocybe calciphila Arnolds

Limestone waxcap

A rare species preferring base-rich grassland so well suited to machair. Difficult to separate in the field from similar small red species, especially H. miniata. Occasionally, orangey colour-morphs appear which are confusing. They can also appear orangey when faded or washed-out.
