Fungi Outer Hebrides

Phylum: Basidiomycota   Family: Cortinariaceae

Cortinarius elatior Fr.

Wrinkled Webcap

Until recently this was Cortinarius livido-ochraceus but now synonymised; I have retained the common name. (In the recent naming frenzy Cortinarius elatior is apparently the Tall Webcap.) Associated mainly with Fagus but also found with Betula and Abies on acidic soils. The amount of violaceous pigmetation is quite variable. Widespread but infrequently recorded.
