Hygrocybe punicea (Fries) P. Kummer

Crimson waxcap

A common species of unimproved grassland. A greasy cap, deep red when young, becoming paler, often with yellow infusion, with age. Thick, fibrillose stipe, flushed with yellow and red, almost white at base. This robust species is quite common on good machair sites in the Outer Hebrides.
