Phylum: Basidiomycota   Family: Hygrophoraceae

Hygrocybe conica (Schaeffer) P. Kummer

Blackening waxcap

A common species, quite variable in colour from almost scarlet to yellow, blackening with age or bruising. Pronounced conical cap with a pale-yellow stipe. Can easily be confused with the similar Hygrocybe conicoides, especially in the latter's preferred habitat of coastal dune slacks.
